Tint darkness is measured as visible light transmission (VLT): the lower the percentage, the darker the tint. Virginia sets its limits under Code of Virginia § 46.2-1052, and the right shade depends on your vehicle type.

It depends on your vehicle type. On sedans and coupes, front side windows must let in at least 50% of light, and the rear side windows and rear window must let in at least 35%. On SUVs, vans and pickup trucks, the front side windows have the same 50% limit, but the rear side and rear windows can be any darkness. On any vehicle, windshield tint is only allowed above the AS-1 line. Virginia checks tint during the annual state safety inspection, so we’ll help you pick a shade that passes. If your car is registered in Maryland or DC, let us know, since their rules are different.

Yes. Purple, bubbling or peeling tint is a sign of an older or lower-quality film breaking down. We offer professional window tint removal to take it off safely, clean the glass and adhesive residue, and install new film. It’s also the fix if your current tint is darker than Virginia allows.

A legal shade from a quality film keeps night visibility good. Virginia’s 50% limit on front side windows exists for this reason, and ceramic films offer excellent optical clarity. If you do a lot of night driving, we can recommend a lighter shade that still blocks heat and UV rays, since ceramic tint doesn’t need to be dark to perform.
